Dear friends and colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to invite you to attend the 39th Annual Congress of the European Strabismological Association in Porto from 13th-16th September 2017. Porto is a city from which many of the early explorers of the Americas set out. We normally welcome a number of colleagues from the US, but this year we are specifically inviting our colleagues from AAPOS to join us. We will have a joint programme of invited speakers from Europe and the USA and aim to learn from each other by exploring and discussing strabismus topics where our approaches may differ. We also hope the meeting will lead to new transatlantic friendships and collaborations. There will be excellent social opportunities for this at both at the Welcome Reception, which will be a cruise on the Duoro, and at the Gala Dinner in the spectacular Yeatman's Hotel high above the city. This overlooks the historic city centre and the Duoro with its bridge built by Gustav Eiffel using the same construction techniques as his tower and the inner structure of the Statue of Liberty. There will also be the opportunity to visit one of the caves where port is matured and sample the results! We are holding the Congress in the Alfandega Congress Centre on the banks of the Duoro. This is the historic converted customs warehouse and retains many original features including the steel rails and turntables in the floor that were used for the trucks that moved goods around. Transport links to Porto are excellent and there will be a good range of hotels from which to choose accommodation. Do book early because Porto is a very popular destination in September. I look forward to meeting you in Porto.

Yours sincerely,

John Sloper

President,

European Strabismological Association

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Porto and to the 39th Annual Congress of the European Strabismological Association. The Scientific Committee is developing a programme with topics covering all the fields of interest in strabismus. Many distinguished speakers from Europe and the USA have joined us and will take part in this Congress, ESA 2017 will be a ESA/ AAPOS joint meeting. Porto is a pleasant city with many sites of interest and places to visit. Located along the Douro river estuary, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The congress will be held in the Alfândega Congress Centre, on the river bank, facing Douro bridges and wine cellars. A city with history, Porto enchants and delights both residents and tourists, exhibiting proudly its streets, monuments, bridges and people. One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the city was responsible for the packaging, transport and export of the fortified wine. Porto is also a town with magnificent beaches and museums, living side by side with the sea and a major University center. We hope that you will enjoy the Congress and that your interaction with your colleagues from many different countries will stimulate a creative exchange of ideas and will be personally rewarding. We also hope and trust that you will enjoy your visit to the very beautiful and exciting city of Porto, in September 2017.

Yours sincerely,
